Scott Snyder has taken to social media to answer questions about Absolute Batman, the Absolute line and DC All-In. He began stating how many Absolute books there are "Right now there are 8." Only five have been announced and Bleeding Cool named another. But there are two more already. Looks like I'd better put my ear to the ground again.
How does this all fit together? "in the DC ALL IN #1 book in Oct., there's a story that creates the Absolute U and keeps it a part of the main U story, but each book has its own track. You'll be able to read these as ongoings w/no crossovers for a long time"
On Poor Bruce, "it took shape when I realized it wasn't a hook or a premise. "Batman loses his money…" It was a complete rethinking of every aspect. If Batman comes up with nothing, who would his parents be, his villains be, what would his Gotham be, all of it? It's a top-to-bottom rethinking."
On the Justice League, "The Main DCU will be more connected, more robust, and the Absolute DCUwill be characters isolated, coming into their own."
On Gotham, "it's like NYC now. With taller, prettier buildings above the old gargoyles, owned by people who never show up. Shinier, colder, a more epic stage…"
On Big Bruce Wayne, "Bruce in Absolute works to change things in his own way. He's not rich, never has been. That was one of the moments that I loved thinking about this—if he's not wealthy or famous, he doesn't have to walk a line as Bruce. He doesn't have to wear tuxes or hide his physique to pretend. He can be huge because Bruce Wayne is no one, so look out."
And the different Bruces "Bruce in the main U is order – he holds things together against the chaos of his villains. In the Absolute U, Bruce IS the chaos. He's like a force of nature who refuses to believe we can't do better… he's smart bruce, but more resourceful b/c he has to be, and more brutal. he's young, angry, definitely the most violent batman i've written. like DKR muscles on a wild kid"
On the cape."the cape is an engineering feat (one of his jobs is as a city engineer). It has wires and hooks in it, can tense up so he can glide, or walk on the tips, climb walls like a bat… I love it. the cape. Absolute Batman 1 October 9."
As for whether it will be reimagined Batman villains or characters cut from new cloth, "both"
Oh, and yes, something he did once then never happened; he "pitched to DC what if Metal ended with an Xover with Marvel – like the source wall falls and who's there but the silver surfer?! But never got close :)"
Previously I scooped the existence of what would later called the Absolute Universe lineback in October 2023 last year. naming it as theAbsolute Universe in April this yearaspart of DC All-In. I scooped that it would launch from DC Comics in October 2024 withAbsolute Batman. That the lead writers and artists would beJason Aaron, Deniz Camp, Wes Craig, Nick Dragotta, Al Ewing, Che Grayson, Jeff Lemire, Jahnoy Lindsay, p*rnsak Pichetshote, Nick Robles, Rafa Sandoval, Hayden Sherman, Scott SnyderandKelly Thompson.
Also, previously, I had reported that the line would includeAbsolute BatmanbyScott SnyderandNick Dragotta andAbsolute SupermanbyJason Aaron.Absolute Wonder WomanbyKelly Thompson.Absolute FlashbyJeff Lemire. Then thatAl Ewingwould writeAbsolute Green LanternandDeniz Campwould writeAbsolute Martian Manhunter.
Since then, Bleeding Cool ran how the Absolute Universe will be aboutsuperheroes as underdogs. A radical reinvention of classic DC superheroes in a shared universe, as if they had been invented today with a Batman as a huge, street-level thug. But that this will beone strand of DC narratives going forward, with a jumping-on point across the DC Comics publishing line, as part of DC All-In. DC Comics actually managed to announceAbsolute Batman's existence by accident in a merchandise post.
And before you knew it, it was all official… and we got to see more ofAbsolute Batman,Absolute Superman,Absolute Wonder WomanandDC All-In. And thenScott Snyder andJoshua Williamsontold all… and confirmedAbsolute FlashbyJeff LemireandNick Roblesand Absolute Green Lantern from Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay. DC even confirmed what we reported aboutRam V's new book bridging the gap between Absolute and Classic… as New Gods with Evan Cagle.
