   Teddy Sheringham doubled England's lead at Wembley early in the second half.

   Paul Gascgoine's deep corner was met by Teddy Sheringham, who expertly placed his header past Edwin van der Sar at the back post.

   Paul Ince's first-half booking meant that he missed the quarter-final match at Euro 96, which coincidentally was against Spain.

   David Platt, a hero of England's run to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, came back into the team as Ince's replacement and scored one of the penalties that helped Terry Venables' side beat Spain after the last-eight tie ended 0-0 after extra time.

   That was the first real good effort on goal by the Dutch. Quite a long time coming.

   Not on this occasion though after being denied by a strong save from David Seaman. England maintained their 1-0 lead.

    "There's an expression of disbelief from Danny Blind" says legendary BBC commentator Barry Davies on the Dutch defender giving away the spot-kick.

    Maybe he was stunned by Paul Ince's wonderful touch and tumble - almost balletic. Watch it again here.

    England went 1-0 up midway through the first half at Wembley thanks to an Alan Shearer penalty.

    The touch to get into the box from Paul Ince was wonderful, forcing a foul out of Danny Blind, with Shearer converting comfortably.

    So far, England have rewritten the cliché of a game of two halves. England have played for two halves but in two games - the first half against Switzerland and the second half against Scotland.
