Is this tool vanity-worthy?
- Written by Namrata Sindwani

Are you intrigued by beauty influencers online using those moon-shaped or scalloped crystals to massage their faces? Do you wonder what it is, if it benefits the skin, and if you should invest in one too? For the newly initiated, the tool is called a gua sha, and most skincare enthusiasts cannot stop raving about it.
Although it became a popular skincare tool in the recent years, it is a 2000-year-old Chinese practice done to alleviate pain from different body parts.
Literally, ‘gua’ refers to the scratching of the skin, while ‘sha’ refers to the texture appearing after scratching. A 2016 study published in the Peer journal defines gua sha as a therapeutic technique involving repeated, unidirectional, press-strokes of the lubricated skin. The blemishes fade and completely resolve within 2–5 days with the symptoms alleviating either immediately or within a few hours.
When used correctly, a gua sha can provide multiple benefits. The semi-precious stone when used with soft pressure on the face improves blood circulation, promotes lymphatic drainage, and reduces muscle tension, explains dermatologist Dr Saguna Puttoo, Apollo Clinic, Kondapur, Hyderabad. The improved circulation helps the skin look more radiant, while the drainage reduces puffiness.
It can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by increasing blood flow and relaxing facial muscles. The gentle scraping also enhances collagen production making the skin look firm and radiant.
When used correctly, a gua sha can:
Benefits of gua sha
- Improves circulation: Gives the skin a healthy, natural glow
- Reduces puffiness: Especially around the eyes and jawline
- Eases tension: Relaxing facial muscles can make the skin look smoother
- Boost product absorption: Enhance the effectiveness of serums and oils.
- Enhance tone and texture: Regular use can firm the skin and even out the complexion.
Risks associated with gua sha
While it is generally safe, there are risks if it is not performed correctly
- Redness or bruising: Applying too much pressure can cause this, especially on sensitive skin.
- Skin irritation: This occurs if used on inflamed areas or without proper lubrication.
- Worsening of skin conditions: Avoid using gua sha on active acne, rosacea, or eczema, as it may aggravate these conditions.
If you are new to using a gua sha, Dr Puttoo recommends starting by doing it 2-3 times a week. Once you are comfortable, you can perform it daily. “Beginners can start with a medium-sized tool made of jade or rose quartz. These materials are smooth, gentle, and naturally cool, which is soothing for the skin.” A heart-shaped or curved gua sha is suggested as it fits well with the contours of the face.
While a gua sha promotes smoother-looking skin, it is not a replacement for medical treatments or procedures. You can play around with gua sha in your skincare routine. Just be sure to use proper techniques and avoid overworking your skin. It yields best results when performed consistently as a complementary practice in your skincare routine.
(If you experience unusual redness, irritation, or discomfort, stop using gua sha and consult a dermatologist.)
