10 key Texas A&M players to know in 2024, including Aggies QB1 Conner Weigman (2024)

Talent is rarely of question on roster, and this season is no different. This year’s roster features its usual five-stars, but there are also under-the-radar athletes who could take a step forward.

Here are 10 Aggies to know in 2024:

Moss was already going to be a key piece of A&M’s offense, but his role took a big jump with Sunday’s news that sophom*ore RB Rueben Owens will miss the season with a lower body injury. Now, Owens will team up with junior RB Amari Daniels and graduate RB EJ Smith to carry the Aggies’ ground game, an area that’s flown under the radar amongst the excitement for A&M’s passing game.

Moss weighs 10 pounds more than Owens and can act as a bulldozer through the trenches while Daniels is more nimble at 5-9. Moss can also serve as a blocker to offer sophom*ore QB Conner Weigman more time in the pocket. Moss can help the Aggies develop a balanced offense that isn’t as reliant on Weigman and his arm.

2. Nic Scourton

Junior DE / 6-4, 285 pounds

2023 stats: 50 tackles, 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 3 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble

Scourton returns to his hometown of Bryan-College Station via West Lafayette, Indiana, where he spent two seasons at Purdue after not receiving an offer from A&M out of high school. He caught the Aggies’ attention by leading the Big Ten in sacks last season, and they scooped him up as soon as they could.

Scourton puts immense pressure on opposing offenses, whether they’re passing the ball or running it. He’s athletic enough to get to the quarterback through the offensive line with a strong ability to finish and bring down the ballcarrier. Scourton has been praised plenty without playing a down at A&M, which speaks to the kind of season he’s capable of having.

3. Moose Muhammad III

Graduate WR / 6-1, 195 pounds

2023 stats: 27 receptions, 345 yards, 2 touchdowns

Muhammad’s stats aren’t eye-popping, but maybe that’s because he was an under-utilized piece of the Aggies’ wide receiver corps last season. Those unfamiliar with his talent need only watch A&M’s win over LSU in 2022 to see what he’s capable of. Muhammad had five catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, including two spectacular one-handed grabs.

Muhammad has a chance to make his last year in Aggieland the best of his career within a talented wide receiver room. He’s arguably the team’s top deep threat that can catch any ball thrown his way with his athleticism.

4. Bryce Anderson

Junior DB / 6-0 / 192 pounds

2023 stats: 54 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 7 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 5 pass deflections

Beyond Anderson’s on-field production, he brings so much to the defense in terms of leadership and initiative, dating back to his freshman season. In practice, he’s the type to run through drills first while setting the tone for his teammates.

The Beaumont product’s on-field production isn’t too bad, either. Last year, he was A&M’s top man in coverage, lining up with other teams’ best receivers. Anderson is the type to make the guys around him better while filling out the stat sheet on his own.

5. Donovan Green

Sophom*ore TE / 6-4, 265 pounds

2023 stats: Did not play due to injury

Green missed out on what was set to be a very promising 2023 season, but an ACL injury suffered in fall camp knocked him out for the year. In his freshman campaign, he caught 22 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Green showed he could be more than just your typical blocking tight end, but rather one that makes a difference as a pass-catcher.

There’s already excitement for what Green can do this season with a spot on the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. With the departure of last year’s leading tight ends, Jake Johnson and Max Wright, he can reenter the spotlight.

6. Shemar Stewart

Junior DE / 6-6, 290 pounds

2023 stats: 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 2 pass deflections, 1 fumble recovery

Stewart is another player whose stats may not tell the whole story. He was a five-star prospect coming out of Miami and has played in every game while on campus while being named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2022. Last year, Stewart earned the defense’s Most Improved Award at the annual team banquet.

“If you gave me and you two hours in a lab to build a defensive end, they would come out looking like Shemar Stewart,” defensive coordinator Jay Bateman recently said.

Stewart said he’s playing “angrier” this season. If that’s the case, both Aggies and NFL scouts could be very happy with him.

7. Trey Zuhn III

Junior LT / 6-7, 315 pounds

2023 stats: Started all 13 games

Arguably A&M’s most glaring weakness last year was an offensive line that oftentimes struggled to provide any of the team’s four quarterbacks with adequate protection. The success of a team starts with its offensive line, which the Aggies learned in 2020′s Orange Bowl campaign with their Maroon Goons unit.

Zuhn was one of two players on last season’s team to start each game. The position features a number of returners while bringing in a couple of transfers as well. Zuhn leads the unit as a team captain, and his experience will pave the way for the rest of the offense to do its thing.

8. Taurean York

Sophom*ore LB / 6-0, 235 pounds

2023 stats: 74 tackles, 3 sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble

York surpassed all expectations last season, starting all 13 games and being named a freshman All-American by ESPN. Now, he’s a team captain as another vocal leader of the Aggies’ defense. York had A&M’s second-most tackles in 2023 behind his linebacker partner Edgerrin Cooper, a second-round NFL draft pick of the Green Bay Packers.

If York can pick up where he left off from last year, he’ll be part of one of the conference’s top linebacker groups with Florida transfer Scooby Williams and Pitt transfer Solomon DeShields.

9. Conner Weigman

Sophom*ore QB / 6-3, 220 pounds

2023 stats: 82-of-119, 979 yards, 8 touchdowns, 2 interceptions; 12 rushes, 63 yards, 2 touchdowns

Advertisem*nt

You can’t have a list of players to watch without including the starting quarterback, right? Weigman has generated plenty of excitement for this season despite playing in just nine career games, with just four appearances last year before breaking his foot. When he has played, though, Weigman has impressed with a strong arm and an ability to scramble for yardage.

This is the first season since 2020 that the Aggies have an undisputed starter at quarterback entering fall camp. Weigman carries lots of promise, and he could have a strong season as long as he stays healthy.

10. Terry Bussey

Freshman DB / 6-0, 195 pounds

Advertisem*nt

Bussey was the crown jewel of A&M’s 2024 recruiting class as a five-star athlete out of small-town Timpson. He led the Bears to an undefeated season and a 2A-I state title while playing on both sides of the ball. Bussey’s reputation precedes him, with over 11,000 all-purpose yards, 169 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in high school.

Coach Mike Elko has said Bussey will play cornerback for the Aggies, but the freshman could find himself across the field, whether it’s returning kickoffs and punts or lining up for plays as a receiver. He opens up a number of possibilities and can make plays wherever A&M needs him.
